French life. What images do these words conjure up? Different things to different people, but if we haven’t actually visited France and seen for ourselves, they will usually depend upon images that have been created by the world’s media. As we see the sleek French models clomping down the catwalks at famous French designers’ fashion shows, we can easily believe that the capital city is full of incredibly elegant women who are attended by rich men in suits. It’s intimidating to visit an up-market Parisian café and imagine all the other clients belong to this Paris chic.In reality it’s only a small fraction of French people that are quite so fashion conscious and not everyone in the cities is well dressed. It’s true that many are, but it’s not an obsession. Most French city dwellers are nicely dressed and friendly, outgoing and generous characters, presenting another angle on French Life.
